How it works

A leaderboard reads the same balances your economy already tracks and sorts them over a window. The window is the whole design decision: all-time boards reward tenure and become static, while weekly or monthly boards reset the contest and keep it winnable for someone who joined yesterday. Most healthy servers run both, using all-time for status and a rolling period for competition.

When to use it

Add a leaderboard once enough members are earning that ranking is meaningful. With ten active members it just publishes a hierarchy everyone already knew.

Worked example

A never-resetting leaderboard is a wall for anyone who joined late: after a year the top 10 is unreachable and the ranking stops motivating the 95 percent of members below it. Run a monthly board alongside the all-time one, show the top 10 publicly, and let a member see their own rank privately whatever it is.

Common mistakes

• Running only an all-time board, which tells new members the game was decided before they arrived.
• Displaying too many places, so the list reads as a directory rather than a podium.
• Letting purchasable earn-rate boosts feed the same board as unpaid activity, which makes the ranking meaningless.
