Automation replaces a moderator's judgement with a rule that fires on a trigger. The value is consistency and speed at volume; the cost is that a badly specified rule applies its mistake to everyone at once. Sound practice is to run a new rule in a log-only mode first, read what it would have done, and only then let it assign roles or hand out rewards.

When to use it

Automate anything you have done manually more than a handful of times with the same outcome. Keep judgement calls, appeals, and anything irreversible in human hands.

Worked example

Automate the tasks that are both frequent and mechanical: crediting rewards, assigning roles, drawing winners, posting leaderboards. Leave judgement calls to moderators. A server running one quest set and one raffle a week hands roughly 6-10 hours a month of manual tracking to the bot, which is the actual return on setting it up.

Common mistakes

• Automating a rule with no audit log, which makes an incorrect mass action impossible to unwind.
• Stacking multiple bots that assign the same role, producing duplicate or fighting assignments.
• Automating an appeals process, where the entire point is that a person reconsiders.
