Sequencing matters: an easy first quest establishes the habit, a mid-tier quest asks for real effort, and a final quest converts participants into whatever outcome you actually wanted. Because the campaign closes, you get a clean before-and-after measurement that an always-on reward system never produces.

When to use it

Run a campaign around a dated event: a launch, a tournament, a content drop, a funding announcement. Outside those moments, standing quests do the job with less coordination cost.

Worked example

A campaign is a set of quests with one outcome. For a product launch: 3 quests over 7 days, escalating from 10 points for reading the changelog to 50 for filing a reproducible bug. Expect a drop of roughly half at each step, so 300 members on quest one means about 75 reaching quest three.

Common mistakes

• Making the first quest the hardest, which loses most of the audience before they start.
• Leaving the campaign open indefinitely, which removes the urgency that made it work.
• Not defining the success metric before launch, so the post-mortem becomes an argument about interpretation.
