How it works

A points system has two halves that must be balanced: earn rules and sinks. Earn rules define how points enter circulation, usually with cooldowns so a single member cannot farm them. Sinks define how points leave, whether that is buying a role, entering a raffle, or claiming an item. Without sinks, balances only grow, inflation sets in, and the numbers stop meaning anything within a couple of months.

When to use it

Use points when you want a single currency that ties several different behaviours together, so voice time, quest completions, and social actions all feed one balance members can spend.

Worked example

Price the economy backwards from the prize. If your monthly prize is worth $50 and you want roughly 30 entrants, each entry should cost about 100 points and a member should be able to earn 100 points in a week of normal participation. That fixes your per-action values: 10 points a message, 25 a social action, capped at 100 a day.

Common mistakes

• Building earn rules with no sinks, so points inflate and later rewards have to be priced absurdly high.
• Omitting cooldowns, which makes point farming the dominant strategy within days of launch.
• Changing earn rates without announcing them, which reads as moving the goalposts and costs trust.
