Retention is decided in the first session far more than in month three. A member who completes one action and receives one acknowledgement on day one is dramatically more likely to return than one who reads a rules channel and leaves. The tooling side of retention is therefore mostly onboarding: a first quest, a visible reward, and a reason to come back tomorrow such as a streak or a weekly reset.

When to use it

Prioritise retention work when your join numbers look healthy but active-member counts do not move. That gap means you are buying arrivals and losing them before activation.

Worked example

Retention is decided in the first week. Of members who post nothing in their first 7 days, the large majority never post at all, so the measurement that matters is the share of joiners who send one message within 24 hours. Without onboarding automation that number typically sits under 10 percent; a two-task welcome quest is the cheapest lever on it.

Common mistakes

• Measuring retention by total members rather than by returning active members.
