How it works

Engagement rate divides active members by total members over a window, which makes it comparable across servers of different sizes in a way that raw activity counts are not. It also falls automatically whenever you acquire members faster than you activate them, which is a feature rather than a flaw: a declining rate during a growth push is telling you the onboarding path is the bottleneck.

When to use it

Use engagement rate as the headline community metric when reporting upward, with the raw active count alongside it so a healthy rate on a shrinking base is visible.

Worked example

Define it as active members over total members for a fixed window, and always state the window. Weekly engagement of 10-15 percent is normal for a mid-size server; monthly figures look three to four times healthier for the same server, which is why the number is so often quoted without its window.

Common mistakes

• Reading a falling rate as failure during rapid growth, when it is usually an activation gap.
• Counting members who never left as active, which inflates the numerator.
• Comparing rates against other servers whose active definition you do not know.
