DAU counts distinct members who did something on a given day, and the definition of 'something' decides the number. Counting anyone who opened the server inflates it; counting members who sent a message, joined voice, or completed a quest gives a figure you can act on. The ratio of DAU to total members is usually more informative than either number alone, because it survives growth.

When to use it

Track DAU when you need to know whether the community is alive today, and pair it with a monthly figure so you can see the stickiness ratio rather than a single day's noise.

Worked example

Count a member as active only if they posted, joined voice, or completed a quest that day; reaction-only activity flatters the number. A healthy mid-size server runs a daily active figure around 2-5 percent of members and a weekly figure around 10-15 percent. If daily is above weekly divided by three, you have a small core carrying the server.

Common mistakes

• Comparing your DAU to another server's without checking whether both count the same actions.
• Reading a single day in isolation, when weekday and event cycles dominate the variance.
• Optimising DAU with daily check-in rewards, which lifts the number without lifting participation.
