How it works

You map a threshold to a role, and the bot assigns it when a member crosses that line. Two design choices decide how it feels: whether rewards stack, so members accumulate every role they qualify for, or replace, so they hold only their highest tier. Discord's own permission hierarchy sets a hard constraint, because a bot can never assign a role positioned above its own.

When to use it

Use role rewards when the role grants something concrete: a channel, a permission, a recognisable colour. A role that does nothing is noise in the member list.

Worked example

Roles are the cheapest reward you have, which is why they get diluted. Keep 3-4 earned tiers with real thresholds, at 1,000, 5,000 and 15,000 points, and make each one unlock something visible: a channel, a colour, a raffle multiplier. A role that unlocks nothing is a cosmetic that stops motivating within a month.

Common mistakes

• Placing reward roles above the bot's role, which makes assignment fail silently.
• Creating so many tiers that no single role signals anything.
• Hitting a free-tier reward cap halfway through the ladder and having to redesign around it.
