How it works

A leveling bot grants XP per message, per word, per reaction, or per minute of voice, subject to a cooldown, then maps cumulative XP onto levels. Role rewards fire when a member crosses a level threshold. The two settings that decide whether the system feels fair are the cooldown, which caps how fast anyone can climb, and the curve, which decides how quickly the gap between old and new members becomes unbridgeable.

When to use it

Use leveling for ambient recognition of long-term regulars. It rewards showing up, which is exactly what you want for a community whose value is continuity rather than campaigns.

Worked example

A typical XP curve gives 15-25 XP per message with a 60-second cooldown, so a member chatting steadily earns roughly 1,000 XP an hour. Set the first role at 1,000 XP so it lands inside a member's first real conversation, then space later roles at 5,000, 15,000 and 40,000 to stretch across months rather than weeks.

Common mistakes

• Picking a steep curve early, which makes level 50 unreachable and demotivates everyone below it.
• Hitting a free-tier role-reward cap partway through designing the ladder, then having to redesign it around a paywall.
• Rewarding voice XP without AFK detection, which turns an empty channel into a farming spot.
